Welding systems

The shortage of skilled welders is real. How technology makes up for it in 2026

Good welders are ever harder to find. The good news is that modern inverters and laser welding make the operator more productive and the weld bead more consistent.

The most quoted bottleneck in metal production is not the price of steel, it is the lack of people to weld it. The shortage of skilled welders has become a structural problem across the whole industry, because the workforce is ageing and trade schools do not manage to cover the departures. The consequence shows up directly in rising labour costs and in deadlines that are hard to keep.

Technology does not solve the crisis completely, but it eases it in two ways. It makes a less experienced operator productive in a short time and removes a good part of the variability introduced by the human hand.

Why modern inverters matter

Today's synergic machines come with programs preset by material and thickness. The operator picks the combination they need and the machine adjusts its own parameters. The result is a uniform bead, with fewer settings lost along the way and lower consumption of wire and gas. The MIG and MAG process stays dominant, at around 70% of industrial applications, precisely because of its speed and versatility. That consistency translates in the end into fewer reworks and into parts that pass quality control the first time.

Double pulse, where thin gauge decides

For thin sheet and for aluminium, double pulse technology carefully controls the heat input and produces a clean, attractive bead without burning through the material. It is the difference between a part that merely looks industrial and one that looks well made.

The leap forward: portable laser welding

The biggest change of pace comes from portable laser welding. At a power in the range of 1000 to 1500 watts, it welds fast, with low distortion and a small heat affected zone, and the gun is easy to handle even for an operator just starting out. On top of that, modern processes keep the worker out of the path of fumes and excessive heat, which means a real gain in safety and not only in productivity.

The conclusion is straightforward. You cannot manufacture welders overnight, but you can equip the people you already have with tools that make them better and faster.
