Why flexography remains the queen of package printing in 2026
Digital has changed a lot, yet at high volume, on paper and cardboard, flexography stays the most efficient printing technology. Here is why.

Packaging is the first physical contact between a brand and its customer. Whoever prints that packaging in millions of copies, on paper and cardboard, uses flexography in most cases. With a market above seven billion dollars in 2026, flexo still leads package printing, from labels all the way to cardboard boxes.
The right question is not whether you choose flexo or digital, but what you use and for what kind of job.
Why flexo wins at volume
The strength of flexography lies in speed and in the low cost per thousand copies. At large print runs no other technology comes close to its efficiency, and the fact that it prints on a wide range of substrates makes it suitable for almost any packaging. Digital has its clear advantage at short runs and personalisation, but once volume grows, flexo becomes economically unbeatable. On a large run, the cost of preparing the plates is spread over so many copies that it becomes negligible per unit.
Quality has caught up with offset
The idea that flexo means poor quality belongs to the past. Modern presses hold registration in the order of a tenth of a millimetre, and anilox and plate technologies have pushed graphic fidelity close to the level of offset. Today a package printed with flexo can look just as clean as through any other process.
Sustainability is no longer optional
Regulatory pressure is pushing the whole industry toward water based inks and UV inks with reduced volatile compound emissions, and toward recyclable substrates. This is no longer a marketing argument, it is a compliance requirement. And when the press is combined with die cutting and slotting modules, you move from the roll of material to the finished, cut package in a single flow, exactly as modern production demands.
