Face-lit, halo or edge-lit: the illuminated letter guide for 2026
Three ways to light a letter, three completely different effects, and the right client for each.

"Illuminated letter" doesn't describe a single product, but at least three completely different effects. Knowing which fits each client is the difference between a good quote and one that misses the mark.
Face-lit
The most common style. The letter's translucent face glows uniformly from inside: during the day you see the brand color, at night you see maximum contrast and legibility, without the design changing. Works excellently where you need raw visibility (heavy traffic, malls, street facades). It's the safe choice when the "we're here" message must be read from afar.
Halo / reverse-lit
Here the LEDs are mounted behind the letter and project light onto the wall, creating a diffused aura around each character. The effect is more atmosphere than shine: depth, refinement, sophisticated air. Performs at close range (storefronts, reception areas, lobbies, office buildings). Watch the mounting surface: a smooth, light-colored wall reflects light evenly, while a dark or textured one diminishes the halo effect.
Edge-lit (acrylic)
LEDs are placed on the edge of an acrylic panel, and light travels through the material, highlighting engraved or printed elements while leaving the rest of the panel clean. The result is a thin, elegant profile, perfect for interiors: directories, menus, architectural signage. It's also energy efficient, with consistent illumination.
The common denominator: LED
Regardless of style, LED dominates (over 90% of installed systems), with lifespans around 50,000 hours and consumption far below neon. Only the way you "place" the light differs.
From a production perspective, each style requires different equipment: stainless steel and aluminum bending for face-lit and halo letters, acrylic bending and thermoforming for illuminated faces and edge-lit panels. A shop that covers the entire chain can say "yes" to any request, instead of sending the client elsewhere.
Practical sales tip: don't propose a style, propose the right fit. Ask where the sign will be, from what distance it's seen, and what budget the client has, then recommend face-lit for street, halo for storefronts and reception, edge-lit for interior. The right choice shows (and is remembered).
